| Description | SELF-CATERING COTTAGE ON FALLS FISH FARM, SCHOEMANSKLOOF
Khaya Mandevu, a self-catering cottage, is on a goldfish and koi farm in Schoemanskloof, a malaria-free conservancy which boasts a variety of birds, including Knysna Louries, Twinspots, Flufftails, Narina Trogons, a large variety of waterbirds, and other wildlife. Based on Falls Fish Farm, the cottage provides the following accommodation: Sleeps 6 comfortably or 7 in 3 bedrooms: 1 with a king size bed (or 2 singles) en-suite; 1 with 2 single beds (or king size); and 1 on an enclosed stoep with a 3/4 bed and 1 queen size futon. Linen and towels are provided, and there are fans in the main rooms. There are 2 bathrooms (1 en-suite with bath & toilet and 1 separate with shower & toilet) and an outside shower with a view of the bush. The fully-equipped kitchen has a gas hob, electric oven, and 2 fridges with freezer space. An outside space with a grid is provided for braais. The lounge has a fire-place but no TV (you can watch sport at a spot in the Kloof if you wish). The first lot of firewood is free – thereafter it is available for purchase. There is also a covered stoep with lovely views which is ideal for relaxing and a shallow dip pool for cooling off. Khaya Mandevu is surrounded by indigenous bush and very close to a beautiful stretch of river frontage so it is ideal for birdwatchers, fishermen, canoeists and anyone who enjoys nature. The cottage overlooks a dam in front of the house with another nearby at the bottom of the gorge. Walks have been cut through the bush and the energetic can walk for hours from the river to the mountain top, with 2 forested gorges, waterfalls and cascades to explore. The dirt road does not require a 4 x 4 although it is advisable for low profile vehicles to drive very slowly and carefully. The cottage can be serviced on a daily basis if required. |
| Directions | Directions from Johannesburg:
Take N4 to Witbank. Bypass Witbank, Middelburg, Ultra City, etc. Go straight until you are through the Machadodorp Toll. After the Toll you go down a very steep hill and the N4 splits via Schoemanskloof and via Waterval Boven. Take the N4 via Schoemanskloof turnoff to the left and take your mileage. Go straight for ±40 kms. After about 20 minutes you will go past the Bambi Hotel on your right and a turnoff to Lydenburg on your left. Don’t take it – go straight towards Nelspruit and enjoy the views! After going down the 2nd steep mountain, go past Falcon Glen Timeshare Resort and then Old Joe’s Kaia on the left. Fairly soon after there is the Weltevreden turnoff to the left. Go straight past this turnoff and start looking out – you are close to where you will turn off. About 1 km after the turnoff you will go through an S-bend – SLOW DOWN. The road veers left, then curves right, and then veers out left again after some high reddish cliffs on your right-hand side (the river is on your left). As you come out of these bends, you will see a road sign indicating a vehicle turn-off coming up and then a very big road sign on your left-hand side, indicating that the road gains an extra lane. Just before this sign on your left-hand side, there is a low-level bridge with a large gate across it, and our neighbour’s sign – JOUBERT & SONS. Turn left off the road, sign in with the gate guard at the bridge and turn immediately right into FALLS FISH FARM. Drive past the ponds and straight through the gates and into the office area for check in. If you reach the Schoemanskloof Winkel on your right-hand side just before a bend to the right, or Joubert & Sons’ packhouse further on, you’ve gone too far. Directions from Nelspruit: Take N4 out of Nelspruit. Go past the Sudwala turn-off then down a very steep hill. At the bottom of the hill there is the old site of a defunct hotel – Montrose Hotel – and the N4 splits – take the N4 via Schoemanskloof road. Go straight for ±15 kms – the road curves but don’t take any turn-offs. After going down the 2nd steep slope there is a long straight stretch and you go over a small stream called the Devil’s Creek - you are close to where you will turn off. At the end of that straight stretch the road curves sharply to the left – SLOW DOWN. The Schoemanskloof Winkel is on your left just after the bend and then you will see a very big road sign on your left-hand side, indicating that the road narrows by losing a lane. Across the road from this sign, there is a low-level bridge, and our neighbour’s sign – JOUBERT & SONS. Turn right off the road, cross over the bridge and turn immediately right into FALLS FISH FARM. Drive straight through the gates into the office area. If you reach the steep cliffs on the left-hand side, or the Weltevreden turn-off, you’ve gone too far. |
