| Description | The Drakenzicht Country Lodge is set on the edge of the Drakensberg Escarpment where the grasslands of the Mpumalanga Highveld meets the warm Lowveld. It enjoys uninterrupted views of the Schoemanskloof valley with its spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
Drakenzicht offers Self Catering, B&B or DBB accommodation for a maximum of 16 guests in stone built chalets with thatched roofs. All chalets are facing towards the spectacular view of the mountains and valley. Garden family chalet (sleeps 4 + space for baby cot) : * 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom * Separate lounge with a built in fireplace and full DSTV * Open plan dining room and fully equipped kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, kettle. * Sliding doors leading out to lapa area with braai place and extended lodge gardens with mountain views. Ideal for families with small children. * Undercover parking Escarpment family chalet (sleeps 6) : * 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (one on suite) * spacious loft room for children * Fully equipped kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, kettle. * Open plan lounge and dining room has a built in fireplace for those chilly evenings. No TV. * An all weather braai area and large veranda on the edge of the escarpment enjoys ultimate privacy and views of the Schoemanskloof valley. Services * Rooms are serviced daily, towels and linen provided (bring own swimming towels). * First batch of firewood included. Extra wood available. Children's policy : Children are most welcome (under 2 years stay free), but given its layout, design and location children should be supervised at all times. The Main Lodge Activities and Facilities The main lodge is in close proximity to the chalets and incorporates a cosy pub and a country-style restaurant specialising in fine country cuisine. Meals can be taken on an all-inclusive basis or booked separately. The communal lounge area has a big screen DSTV facility, and the timber deck of the main lodge offers a splendid view of the mountains and lodge grounds. One of our main attractions is birding, and our recent specials include the Stanley’s Bustard, Martial Eagle, Knysna loerie and the Wood owl. Other activities include hiking, mountain biking and star gazing. Relax around the pool or take a walk through the lodge grounds for some tree-spotting or to watch our resident baboon troop at play. Drakenzicht Country Lodge has smoke free buildings in an area with a high fire hazard. Smoking is permitted on the patios and outside areas, with a high level of care to prevent accidental fires. |
| Directions | From O.R.Tambo International Airport take the R21 to Boksburg. 5km further turn left onto the N12 to Witbank. At Witbank this becomes the N4.
From Johannesburg take the N4 Pretoria east to Witbank. Pass Middelburg and Belfast. Just after the Machadodorp tollgate, the N4 splits. Take the N4 to Nelspruit via Schoemanskloof. This area is mountainous and you will pass De Beers Nek. At the Patatanek signboard (about 33km from split), watch out for a dirt road to your left on top of the plato. There is a white tyre hanging on a tree and the Drakenzicht Signboard just behind it. Follow this dirt road for 6km (10-12 min drive) to Drakenzicht. This road is suitable for normal cars (low profile vehicles not recommended) but it does get slippery when wet. From Nelspruit take the N4 west to Machadodorp via Schoemanskloof (turn right at Montrose split). After 25km you pass Old Joe's Kaia and Falcon Glen. The Old Joe Statue is on you left. 1,8km after Old Joe Rock watch out for a dirt road to your right on top of the plato at Patatanek. GPS Coordinates at entrance: S 25 25 56.3 E 30 28 40.4 |
